Be Flexible with Your Destination
If you’ve decided to take a week off from work and a stay-cation just isn’t in the cards, being flexible with your travel destination can certainly pay off. If you have the luxury of being flexible with your destination, you are absolutely a step ahead. Instead of having a fixed destination in mind, keep your options open. When using popular search engines like Google Flights and Skyscanner, you are able to find the cheapest flights available from your nearest airport. These platforms offer features where you can enter your departure city and see a map of possible destinations with the lowest fares. While it isn’t always possible to be flexible with your destination, when you are able to, these search tools can absolutely help you save some money.
Use Price Comparison Tools
Another way to take advantage of search tools is to utilize fare comparison websites and apps. Sites like Hopper aggregate flight prices from various airlines to offer the best deals possible. You can even set up fare alerts to get notified when prices drop for your preferred routes or locations. Planning a trip to Spain? Set up a trip alert from your home airport to Madrid, Spain and simply wait for Hopper to notify you of a great deal.
Travel During Off-Peak Times
Traveling mid-week, early in the morning, or late at night can significantly reduce your costs. Another feature I love with Google Flights is the calendar option which shows you the price difference if you travel on a Tuesday versus a Saturday for instance. Most travelers prefer to fly on weekends and during business hours, so choosing less popular times may save you money. I’ve previously discussed traveling during the shoulder season (the period between peak and off-peak seasons) for better deals on flights and accommodations.
Using Alternative Airports
Large cities often have multiple airports but have you looked into departing from alternative airports? I would always recommend checking if flying into or out of a smaller or alternative airport can save you money. Sometimes, a short drive to a neighboring airport can result in substantial savings on airfare. For instance, there are at least 4 larger airports within driving distance of me. While I have my favorite airport I like to fly out of, sometimes I can save money departing at a different airport. I have also been able to obtain a direct flight when otherwise I might have to layover out of my preferred airport.
I also like to check Uber for pre-scheduled fares, I’ve found that sometimes taking an Uber to the airport can be more cost-effective than the airport parking.
Leverage Loyalty Programs and Points
If you’ve been to Astonished Abroad before, you know I am a big fan of loyalty programs. If you are a frequent traveler, join airline loyalty programs and collect points when you fly. These points can add up quickly and be redeemed for free or discounted flights, even at the last minute. Also, check your credit card rewards; many cards offer travel points or miles that can be used to offset travel costs.
To be honest, I haven’t paid for a personal international flight in cash in over 4 years. Utilize those points and airline credit cards and you’ll be traveling before you know it.
Check out Last-Minute Hotel Deals
For hotel accommodations, consider using apps like HotelTonight, which specializes in finding last-minute hotel rooms at discounted prices. They often have exclusive deals that can save you a significant amount on lodging. Again, using hotel loyalty programs is a great way to cash in on free rooms. My favorite is the Marriott Bonvoy program.
Look for Packaged Deals
Sometimes, bundling your flight and hotel together can result in substantial savings. While I don’t typically do this, I have friends that have and have scored great deals. Popular websites like Expedia and Priceline, offer package deals that can be more economical than booking separately. These packages often include discounts on car rentals and activities as well especially during the Thanksgiving holiday/Black Friday season.
Stay in Alternative Accommodations
Consider alternatives to traditional hotels. Platforms like Airbnb and VRBO offer unique lodging options that can be cheaper than hotels. I’ve found Airbnb to be a great option when traveling with a group, searching houses with multiple rooms is often more affordable than booking separate hotel rooms. Another great thing about booking an Airbnb is access to a full kitchen which can also save money by not eating out. This is also a great way to stay within your health and wellness goals while traveling. One of our most popular posts details quick and easy hotel room meals! Hostels and guesthouses are also great options for budget-conscious travelers although this is something I personally haven’t experienced.
Use Public Transportation
Once you arrive at your destination, use public transportation instead of taxis or ride-sharing services. While Uber is super convenient, the cost can add up. Many cities offer efficient and affordable public transit options, which can significantly reduce your overall travel costs. Research the local transportation system in advance to familiarize yourself with routes and schedules. While this takes a bit more planning, this can often be done quickly while waiting for your flight and can absolutely pay off in the end.
Pack Smart
Avoid extra baggage fees by packing light and efficiently. Most airlines charge for checked bags, but many still allow one free carry-on and a personal item. Invest in a good quality carry-on bag that meets airline size requirements and pack only the essentials.
